How private is an unlisted link?

What does “unlisted” mean?

An unlisted page is not promoted in a public gallery and is marked so search engines should not index it. Access still depends on possession of the URL, so the page has no identity check at the door.

This sharing model works for a page meant for one person or a small circle when the contents are personal but not secret. It is similar to handing someone a link by message: the intended recipient can open it immediately, and they can also copy or forward it.

Search exclusion reduces accidental discovery; it does not create confidentiality. Search engines can also make mistakes or encounter links elsewhere, so sensitive material should not rely on indexing rules as its only protection.

Why does Appogeny give you two different links?

The recipient link is for viewing. The private edit link is the sole ownership credential for changing or deleting the page. Keeping those jobs separate lets the recipient open the story without receiving control over it.

• Recipient link. Send this to the person who should view the story. Anyone with this link can open the published page.
• Private edit link. Keep this for yourself. It opens the editing controls and permanent deletion. Appogeny stores only a one-way hash of its token and cannot recover the original link for you.

What is suitable for an unlisted page?

Use content you would be comfortable sharing directly with the recipient while accepting that they may save, screenshot, or forward it. Do not include information that would cause harm if the URL reached someone else.

Personal words, shared photos used with permission, and a meaningful song can fit this model. Passwords, financial details, medical records, private addresses, identity documents, or non-consensual intimate material do not.

Also consider the people mentioned in the story. A page about one relationship can contain photos or messages from others. Their privacy and rights still matter even when the page is unlisted.

How should you share and store the links?

Send the recipient link through the channel you normally use with that person, check the preview before sending, and store the private edit link in a trusted password manager or another place only you control.

• Label your saved links. Make it obvious which URL is for the recipient and which one controls editing, so you do not paste the wrong link into a message.
• Avoid public posts. Do not put the recipient URL on an open social profile if the intention is to keep the audience small.
• Keep your own copy of important material. Appogeny is a publishing surface, not the only archive for words or media you cannot replace.
• Delete when the page is no longer wanted. Use the private edit link to permanently remove the page and its uploaded media. A person targeted by a page can also use the public report form for review.

When do you need stronger access control?

Choose a service with authentication or password protection when the recipient’s identity must be verified before the content is shown. An unlisted URL is the wrong tool for material that must remain confidential.

The distinction is simple: unlisted reduces discoverability, while access control restricts who can enter. Knowing which problem you are solving makes the sharing choice much safer.
